Additional Opportunities for Parent Involvement
We recognize that children learn best when parents are engaged in their students’ education. To help parents and guardians become great academic coaches for their children, and to invite parent participation in all aspects of school life, we will feature the following opportunities in addition to the PTO:
School-Family-Student Covenant
To underscore that a mutual commitment is needed to promote academic success, the teacher, parent(s)/guardian(s), and the student all sign a covenant during a goal-setting conference at the beginning of the school year. The covenant outlines the rights and responsibilities of each stakeholder, and affirms the three parties’ mutual accountability in helping the student achieve his or her annual academic goals. In addition to creating accountability for student success, the covenant will aid in the implementation of appropriate staff development, and ensure that parents/guardians are satisfied with their students’ academic plan.
Special Interim Classes
At the beginning of the year three mandatory half-day sessions will be scheduled that will allow parents/guardians to attend school with their children. These sessions will occur on Saturdays and give parents/guardians the opportunity to engage in learning experiences with their students.
Participation in school decision-making
In additional to participation in the PTO, the School will include two parent representatives on the SAC and one parent member on the Board of Directors.
Opportunities to evaluate the School and its staff
Each spring, parents are asked to complete a survey evaluating the school and its programs, the director, and their student’s teachers. The survey results are reviewed by the school staff as well as the Board of Directors, and are a factor in performance reviews and other personnel decisions, and in program implementation.
Regular communication regarding student learning and behavior
Parents, students, and teachers will meet at the end of each grading period to discuss report cards and assess individual student progress towards personal learning goals. In addition, the school staff will contact parents/guardians intermittently to provide positive reinforcement for academic or social growth, and/or to inform parents/guardians when their student has made a choice that does not match the school’s behavior and academic expectations.
